FED: Democrats hint at tax vote delay

CANBERRA, Feb 15 AAP - A vote on the government's tax package might take place after the
key June 30 deadline, the Australian Democrats said today.

The Democrats, who want food exempt from proposed 10 per cent GST, will regain the balance
of power in the Senate from July 1.

Democrats leader Meg Lees said that while the Senate tax inquiry was due to report on April
19, the complexity of the tax legislation meant there was no guarantee the Senate would deal
with it before July 1.

"I think as we're now understanding the complexities within the 16 pieces of legislation,
even the government itself must be having some second thoughts of pushing it through this side
of the first of July," she told reporters.

"But obviously they are going to keep trying to do that."
